Computational approaches are becoming increasingly important for ecologists. My work managing the Portal Project dataset (Ernest et al. 2016) and developing other large datasets (Thibault et al. 2011) and analyzing citizen science data (eBird) has allowed me to develop strong database (White et al. 2013), programming (R, Python, SQL), and informatics skills. Software Carpentry and Data Carpentry are groups that I volunteer with to teach other scientists these tools.
